RON ALDRICH
MEDAL OF VALOR AWARD
DEPARTMENT OF VERMONT

To recognize and promote those who contribute, to an outstanding degree, to the citizens in our state.  It is recommended that the following guidelines be observed when submitting candidates for consideration for FIREFIGHTER, EMT & RESCUE AWARDS.

Written reports must be submitted containing the “FOUR “W'S”; i.e. WHEN, WHO, WHERE, and WHAT.

When possible, reports should be substantiated by copies of Fire Reports, EMT reports or newspaper accounts.

Awards may be considered for continuous outstanding performance of duty for the protection of life and property.

Local fire departments and emergency departments may be consulted for possible candidates for awards.

To be considered:  Powers of observation, diligence and persistence, intelligence of deduction, devotion to duty, demonstrated willingness to risk own loss of life and personal safety to save the life of, or prevent serious injury to, another.

Did the action take place while the candidate was on or off duty?

Was the candidate equipped with safety equipment?  If so, how?

The candidate is not required to be a public safety employee.

Posthumous awards may be presented.

Individual posts and districts are encouraged to conduct “Firefighter, EMT and Rescue Awards”.

Those candidates, submitted for consideration to the Department Firefighter, EMT and Rescue Committee, who are not selected for presentations at the Department Convention should be recommended for consideration by the concerned district for awards on the District or Post level.

Medals of Valor, the highest esteemed medal that can be awarded by The American Legion, must, of necessity, be awarded only to those who demonstrate a high degree of risk of their own life and safety, for the protection of the life and safety of another.  It must be above and beyond the normal performance of duty.

Department firefighter, EMT & Rescue Awards cannot be considered on the basis of District.  The only consideration is to be that of merit.

For Department Award Presentation, incident should have occurred between March 1st of the previous year and March 1st of the present year.
